¿También te pasa que sientes miedo de hablar español con un nativo?

Yo no sé si te pasa lo mismo, pero yo al principio me quedaba paralizado cada vez que tenía que hablar japonés, italiano, chino o alemán con un nativo.

Sentía mariposas en el estómago, me sudaban las manos, mi mente se quedaba en blanco y lo peor de todo es que estaba tan tenso que… ¡no sabía ni que decir!

Era como si mi habilidad de conversar estuviera “bloqueada” por algún motivo.

Sin embargo, me di cuenta de algo. Cuando yo tomaba clases de idiomas en la universidad no tenía este problema. Hablar con mi profesor era fácil y practicaba con mis compañeros todos los días.

¡Y entonces lo entendí!

El problema era que yo todavía no confiaba en mi español, y seguramente, para aumentar mi confianza la mejor solución era usarlo tolo lo posible.

Sin embargo, yo todavía pensaba que si no hablaba con un nativo, no iba a mejorar.

Un día, hablando con mi antigua profesora de Italiano – una mujer increíble que habla fluídamente 8 idiomas – le comenté mi problema.

Ella me miró incrédula y me dijo…

  • A ver, Salvador… si tu quisieras correr una maratón ¿cómo te preparías para sentirte confiado?
  • Pues, corriendo todos los días. ¿no?
  • Y si corrieras todos los días ¿crees que el resultado cambie si corres en la playa, en la ciudad o en la montaña?
  • Mmm, no, creo que no – le dije.
  • ¡Exacto! no importa dónde corras, lo importante es que corras. Y es lo mismo con los idiomas. No importa con quién hables, ¡lo que importa es que hables todos los días!

Y siguiendo su consejo comencé a practicar con todo el mundo:
con amigos de la universidad, con otros estudiantes de idiomas en las redes sociales, con compañeros del trabajo que hablaban los mismos idiomas, y al final, cuando entré en confianza, con mis amigos nativos también.

Y entre más hablaba, más confiado me sentía y mejor podía conversar.

Greetings, my friend!

Are you also afraid to speak Spanish with a native speaker?

I don’t know if it’s the same for you, but in the beginning, I was paralyzed every time I had to speak Japanese, Italian, Chinese or German with a native speaker.

I felt butterflies in my stomach, my hands would sweat, my mind would go blank, and worst of all, I was so tense that… I didn’t even know what to say!

It was as if my ability to converse was “blocked” for some reason.

However, I realized something. When I was taking language classes in college I didn’t have this problem. Talking to my professor was easy and I practiced with my classmates every day.

And then I understood!

The problem was that I still didn’t trust my Spanish, and surely, to increase my confidence the best solution was to use it as much as possible.

However, I still thought that if I didn’t speak with a native speaker, I wasn’t going to improve.

One day, talking to my former Italian teacher – an amazing woman who speaks 8 languages fluently – I told her about my problem.

She looked at me incredulously and said…

Let’s see, Salvador… if you wanted to run a marathon, how would you prepare yourself to feel confident?

Well, running every day, right?

And if you ran every day, do you think the result would change if you ran on the beach, in the city or in the mountains?

Mmm, no, I don’t think so – I said.

Exactly! It doesn’t matter where you run, the important thing is that you run. And it’s the same with languages. It doesn’t matter who you speak with, what matters is that you speak every day!

And following his advice I started practicing languages with everyone:
With friends from university, with other language learners on social networks, with colleagues at work who spoke the same languages, and in the end, when I became confident, with my native friends as well.

And the more I spoke, the more confident I felt and the better I could converse.

Hoy quiero contarte algo personal y pedirte un favor.

Te cuento que, aunque yo empecé a dar clases de inglés en mi país a los 17 años, yo no siempre quise ser profesor.

Por mucho tiempo mi sueño ha sido escribir libros de desarrollo personal, y ayudar a las personas a desarrollar su máximo potencial y vivir una vida más plena.

De hecho, por muchos años me dediqué a ello gratuitamente. Tenía un blog y un podcast de desarrollo personal en el que hablaba de mis viajes y de las experiencias que habían cambiado mi forma de ver el mundo.

Y mientras estuve viajando por Alemania y Japón gracias a mis becas de estudio, fue una experiencia increíble. Pero todo cambió cuando al volver de Japón, la universidad suspendió mi programa de becas y tuve que hacer todo tipo de trabajos para sobrevivir.

Estaba estudiando dos másters al mismo tiempo, me encontraba solo en Alemania y tenía que financiar mi vida y ayudar a mi familia en Venezuela de algún modo.

Así que pasé por todos los trabajos posibles, desde vender hamburguesas en McDonalds, limpiar pisos en el hospital, de mesero y hasta haciendo pizzas en un restaurante.

Fue por casualidad, que en un momento muy dificil de mi vida, en el que no solo estaba muy mal económicamente sino que tenía ya tres años detestando cada día por estar atrapado en un trabajo que odiaba (en la cocina de un restaurante), que el español me salvó la vida.

Acababa de terminar mi máster en enseñanza del español y, sin pensarlo mucho, fui directamente al departamento de español del centro de idiomas de la uni, toque la puerta, me presenté y pregunté si de casualidad necesitaban profesores de español.

Y no, esto no es un cuento de hadas. Por supuesto que en ese momento me dijeron que no. Pero unas semanas más tarde una profesora tuvo que volver de emergencia a su país y ellos necesitaban urgentemente a un profesor nuevo.

¡El resto es historia! Han pasado 3 años desde ese día y aún sigo dando clases en la universidad. Y lo mejor es que descubrí que ser profesor de español no es tan diferente de mi sueño inicial.

Para mí, viajar siempre fue el motor de mi vida. Es lo que me inspira, lo que me hace crecer, es dónde siento que mi vida se expande y donde aprendo a ver el mundo desde otras perspectivas.

Y yo sé por experiencia, que hablar el idioma del país por el que viajas hace que la experiencia cambie completamente.

Por eso, mi misión es ayudar a mis estudiantes a cumplir ese sueño de viajar, de conocer personas diferentes y aprender todo lo posible de nuestra cultura latina ¡Qué no es perfecta! Pero que está llena de alegría, de emociones, de aventura, de amigos y familia, de estar juntos aunque el mundo está en crisis y de celebrar la vida a donde sea que vamos.

Y es por eso que quiero que me ayudes a cumplir mi misión, dejándome conocerte un poco más.

How’s it going, my friend?

Today, I want to tell you something personal and ask you for a favor.

Although I started teaching English in my country when I was 17 years old, I didn’t always want to be a teacher.

For a long time, my dream has been to write books on personal development and to help people develop their full potential and live a more fulfilling life.

In fact, for many years I did it for free. I had a blog and a personal development podcast where I talked about my travels and the experiences that had changed the way I saw the world.

And while I was traveling in Germany and Japan thanks to my scholarships, it was an amazing experience. But everything changed when I came back from Japan, the university suspended my scholarship program and I had to do all kinds of jobs to survive.

I was studying for two masters at the same time, I was alone in Germany and I had to finance my life and help my family in Venezuela somehow.

So I went through all possible jobs, from selling hamburgers at McDonald’s, cleaning floors at the hospital, working as a waiter, and even making pizzas in a restaurant.

It was by chance, at a very difficult time in my life, when I was not only very bad financially but I had already three years of hating every day for being stuck in a job I hated (in the kitchen of a restaurant), that Spanish saved my life.

I had just finished my master’s degree in Spanish teaching and, without thinking much about it, I went straight to the Spanish department of the language center of the uni, knocked on the door, introduced myself, and asked if by any chance they needed Spanish teachers.

And no, this is not a fairy tale. Of course, I was told no at the time. But a few weeks later a teacher had to return to her country on an emergency basis and they urgently needed a new teacher.

The rest is history! It has been 3 years since that day and I am still teaching at the university. And the best thing is that I discovered that being a Spanish teacher is not so different from my initial dream.

For me, traveling has always been the engine of my life. It is what inspires me, what makes me grow, it is where I feel that my life expands and where I learn to see the world from other perspectives.

And I know from experience that speaking the language of the country you are traveling through changes the experience completely.

Therefore, my mission is to help my students fulfill their dream of traveling, meeting different people, and learning as much as possible about our Latin culture, which is not perfect! but it is full of joy, emotions, adventure, friends, and family, being together even though the world is in crisis and celebrating life wherever we go.

And that’s why I want you to help me fulfill my mission by letting me get to know you a little better.

Espero te encuentres bien y estés disfrutando mucho aprendiendo español.

Te escribo porque, hace un tiempo, mientras pensaba cómo podía ayudarte más y más a mejorar tus habilidades de comunicación, me pasó algo interesante.

Era un viernes por la mañana y yo estaba dando clases como siempre para estudiantes universitarios (por Zoom, por supuesto) a un nuevo grupo de principiantes.

Era nuestra quinta clase del nivel A1, y uno de mis estudiantes alemanes, Patrick, estaba un poco frustrado con el método.

Verás, la mayoría de las veces, aunque a los estudiantes les parezca super aburrido, ellos esperan tener una clase con el método tradicional.

Ellos quieren (o, mejor dicho, esperan) que el profesor se pare frente a la clase por dos horas a explicar conjugaciones, reglas y vocabulario. Creen que la mejor forma de aprender es haciendo listas de palabras y rellenando ejercicios de huecos (esos en los que te dan una frase y quitan el verbo para que tú lo completes).

Un método que ya no se recomienda desde los años 70… Y adivina qué ¡conmigo eso no va! xD

¿Te imaginas?

Con una clase así se aburrirían ellos, y peor, ¡me aburrría yo! y tú seguro sabes lo horrible que es estar en una clase en la que el profesor obviamente no tiene ganas de enseñar.

El caso es que Patrick, como todos mis estudiantes en Alemania, iba por su quinta clase de español y todavía ni había visto la primera tabla de verbos, ni tenía una lista de vocabulario; no había aprendido el ABC ni mucho menos había escuchado explicaciones de gramática.

Por el contrario, no habían pasado los primeros 5 minutos de la lección número uno y ya el profesor (ese tipo raro al que llaman Saru) ya le había dado dos o tres patrones de frases y lo había obligado a hablar en español. ¡En la primera clase!

Este proceso se había repetido todas las veces y, para colmo, este profesor hacía toda la clase en español.

Bueno, ese día, mientras yo les enseñaba otro patrón de frases, Patrick no lo pudo soportar más y estalló.

Me dijo: “¡Este médodo es difícil. No me gusta nada! ¡Necesito más gramática y vocabulario para hablar! ¡No puedo entender el español y me gustaría aprender con más orden!”

Como te imaginarás, en ese momento toda la clase se quedó en silencio total y todos me miraban con los ojos muy abiertos, esperando mi reacción.

Yo miré a Patrick con un poco de ironía y le dije: ¡Excelente Patrick!

Él me devolvió una mirada confundida.

¡Es que todo lo que dijiste está en perfecto español! – le dije.

Me volví a la clase y pregunté (en alemán). A ver chicos, ¿alguien se imaginaba que en 5 lecciones iba a poder hablar tanto español como Patrick ahora?

Un par de caras sonrientes negaron con la cabeza.

Y creo que en ese momento, algo hizo click, y Patrick y los demás lo comprendieron: al inicio, lo más importante es aprender a comunicarse al máximo con el mínimo de gramática posible.

¡Bueno chicos! ¡Un poco más de confianza! – dije, y todos se rieron.

Yo sé que puede ser un poco inusual, pero la mejor forma de aprender a hablar es sin pensar en gramática, usando patrones de frases simples que puedes combinar para expresar lo que quieres decir.

Ya con el tiempo, aprenderás toda la gramática y vocabulario que necesitas, ¡cuándo lo necesites!

Poder comunicarse es lo más importante, y con el método tradicional, aprendes muchas reglas y estructuras, pero no aprendes a comunicarte con fluidez.

Dear friend, 

I hope you are feeling well and are enjoying learning Spanish.

I am writing to you because, some time ago, while I was thinking about how I could help you more and more to improve your communication skills, something interesting happened to me.

It was a Friday morning and I was teaching as usual for university students (by Zoom, of course) to a new group of beginners.

It was our fifth A1 class, and one of my German students, Patrick, was a bit frustrated with the method.

You see, most of the time, even if the students find it super boring, they expect to have a class with the traditional method.

They want (or, rather, expect) the teacher to stand in front of the class for two hours explaining conjugations, rules and vocabulary. They believe that the best way to learn is by making lists of words and filling in gap-fill exercises (those where they give you a sentence and take away the verb for you to complete).

A method that is no longer recommended since the ’70s… And guess what, Not on my watch! xD

Can you imagine?

With a class like that, they would get bored, and worse, I would get bored! and you sure know how horrible it is to be in a class where the teacher obviously doesn’t feel like teaching.

The thing is that Patrick, like all my students in Germany, was in his fifth Spanish class and still hadn’t seen the first verb table, didn’t have a vocabulary list, hadn’t learned the ABC’s, let alone heard grammar explanations.

On the contrary, not even the first 5 minutes of lesson number one had passed and already the teacher (that weird guy they call Saru) had already given him two or three sentence patterns and forced him to speak in Spanish.

In the first lesson!

This process had been repeated every time and, to top it off, this teacher did the whole class in Spanish.

Well, that day, as I was teaching them another sentence pattern, Patrick couldn’t take it anymore and he snapped.

He said to me, “This method is hard, I don’t like it at all! I need more grammar and vocabulary to speak! I can’t understand Spanish and I’d like to learn in a more organized order!”

As you can imagine, at that moment the whole class went completely silent and everyone was looking at me with wide eyes, waiting for my reaction.

I looked at Patrick with a bit of irony and said: Excellent Patrick!

He looked back at me confused.

It’s just that everything you said is in perfect Spanish!

I turned to the class and asked (in German). Let’s see guys, did anyone imagine that in 5 lessons I would be able to speak as much Spanish as Patrick does now?

A couple of smiling faces shook their heads.

And I think at that moment, something clicked, and Patrick and the others understood: in the beginning, the most important thing is to learn to communicate as much as possible with as little grammar as possible.

Well, guys! Have a little more trust! – I said, and everyone laughed.

I know it may be a bit unusual, but the best way to learn to speak is without thinking about grammar, using simple sentence patterns that you can combine to express what you want to say.

Eventually, you will learn all the grammar and vocabulary you need, when you need it!

Being able to communicate is the most important thing, and with the traditional method, you learn a lot of rules and structures, but you don’t learn to communicate fluently.

¿Qué tal?

Hoy me ha sucedido algo que me dejó pensando: he hecho algo que en español llamamos “una novatada”.

Esto es “un error de novato”.

Y bueno, como sé que estamos en confianza y creo que puede ayudarte, he decidido contártelo.

No sé si te conté que yo estudio chino desde hace más de dos años, y que por escoger un mal método he tenido que sufrir bastante.

Lo que pasó fue que yo estudié chino en la universidad, y el método que utilizabamos se enfocaba solo en traducción, lectura y escritura, pero no hacíamos casi nada de conversación ni tampoco escuchabamos casi.

Al final, al igual que me paso de niño cuando estudiaba japonés, mis habilidades para leer y escribir llegaron al nivel intermedio, pero mi capacidad de hablar y entender se quedó estancada en el nivel principiante (y muy principiante).

Bueno, yo sabía por experiencia que nivelar mis capacidades auditivas y orales con las demás iba a ser un proceso super aburrido (porque tenía que escuchar una y otra vez audios muy básicos) y a la vez frustrante (porque dentro de mí, yo sabía que yo “debería poder entender esto”, pero en realidad no entendía nada).

¡Pero yo no me iba a dejar derrotar!

Así que, bueno, yendo al grano… esta mañana estaba escuchando un audio un poquito largo y complejo en chino. Era una conversación por teléfono entre un chico y su compañera de la universidad. Él estaba cumpliendo años y quería invitarla a su fiesta. Y, bueno, después que ella se disculpara por haber olvidado su cumpleaños, hablaron un poco sobre el lugar y las personas invitadas a la fiesta.

Y te imaginarás, que si en este momento soy capaz de contarte la historia es porque, en general, ¡estaba entendiendo el diálogo en chino! ¡Wuju!

Pero, para ser sincero, en ese momento yo no estaba nada felíz. De hecho, estaba bastante estresado.

En el diálogo había una frase, y dentro de esa frase habían dos palabras que yo no podía comprender. ¡Dos! Y yo sabía que yo tenía que conocer esas palabras, porque ya había leído la transcripción y escuchado el diálogo hace unas semanas…

Sin embargo… sin importar cuántas veces escuché una y otra vez la misma frase, no pude recordar qué rayos eran estas palabras.

Y en ese momento me di cuenta de lo que estaba pasando.

Yo, que siempre le digo a mis estudiantes que no se enfoquen en entender cada palabra, sino que intenten entender el significado, estaba allí, pasando un mal rato por dos palabritas que nisiquiera necesité para entender el diálogo en general.

El problema con esto, no son las dos palabras que no entendía, ni el tiempo que perdí escuchando dos mil veces el audio. El problema es que yo me había frustrado y me había puesto de mal humor por una tontería.

Y, te aseguro que, cuando estas de mal humor es literalmente imposible aprender nada.

En educación, llamamos a esto el “componente afectivo” del aprendizaje, y significa que, para poder aprender es necesario estar relajado, en un estado emocional positivo, o tu cerebro va a decidir que eso que estas aprendiendo no es importante y lo olvidarás en horas.

Bueno, te cuento todo esto porque si estás estudiando español con un método moderno, seguramente los audios que vienen en tu curso o con tu libro son bastánte naturales. Es decir, las personas hablan a la velocidad normal del español y con frases complejas.

Y en estos casos es muy importante que entiendas una cosa: con este tipo de materiales es imposible que entiendas cada palabra. Es difiícil hasta para un nativo recordar toda esa información, porque es mucha.

Pero estos audios están hechos para que tu aprendas a entender el significado aun cuando no entiendas todas las palabras.

¿Lo entiendes?

La mayoría de las veces solo necesitas entender 30% de las palabras para saber cuál es contenido del mensaje. Y entender el mensaje es mucho más importante.

Y, si esto puede pasarle a un profesor de español, que ha estudiado sobre estos temas, y que ha tenido esta experiencia muchas veces con 6 idiomas distintos… No te preocupes si te pasa a ti también. Es normal.

Intenta enfocarte siempre en entender el mensaje, no las palabras. Y si te estresas sin darte cuenta, toma un descanso y retoma tu español en un rato.

Aprendemos mucho más cuando estamos felices jajaja

How are you doing?

Today, something happened to me that got me thinking: I did something that in Spanish we call “una novatada”.

This is “a rookie mistake”.

And well, since I know we are in confidence and I think it can help you, I decided to tell you about it.

I don’t know if I told you that I have been studying Chinese for more than two years, and that, by choosing a bad method I have had to suffer a lot.

What happened was that I studied Chinese at university, and the method we used focused only on translation, reading and writing, but we did almost no conversation and almost no listening.

In the end, just like what happened to me as a kid when I studied Japanese, my reading and writing skills reached the intermediate level, but my speaking and listening skills were stuck at the beginner (and very beginner) level.

Well, I knew from experience that leveling up my listening and speaking skills with others was going to be both a super boring (because I had to listen to very basic audios over and over again) and frustrating process (because inside me, I knew that I “should be able to understand this,” but I didn’t really understand anything).

But I wasn’t going to let myself be defeated!

So, well, getting to the point… this morning I was listening to a slightly long and complex audio in Chinese. It was a conversation on the phone between a guy and his college roommate. He was having a birthday and wanted to invite her to his party. And, well, after she apologized for forgetting his birthday, they talked a little bit about the venue and the people invited to the party.

And you can imagine, if I’m able to tell you the story at this point, it’s because, for the most part, I was understanding the dialogue in Chinese! Woohoo!

But, to be honest, at that moment I was not happy at all. In fact, I was quite stressed.

In the dialogue, there was one sentence, and within that sentence, there were two words that I couldn’t understand. Two! And I knew that I had to know those words because I had already read the transcript and heard the dialogue a few weeks ago…

However… no matter how many times I heard the same sentence over and over again, I couldn’t remember what the h_ck these words were.

And at that moment I realized what was going on.

I, who always tell my students not to focus on understanding each word, but to try to understand the meaning, was there, having a miserable time over two little words that I didn’t even need to understand the overall dialogue.

The problem with this is not the two words I didn’t understand, nor the time I wasted listening to the audio two thousand times. The problem is that I had gotten frustrated and moody over a silly thing.

And, I assure you, when you are in a bad mood it is literally impossible to learn anything.

In education, we call this the “affective component” of learning, and it means that in order to learn you need to be relaxed, in a positive emotional state, or your brain will decide that what you are learning is not important and you will forget it in hours.

Well, I tell you all this because if you are studying Spanish with a modern method, surely the audios that come in your course or with your book are quite natural. That is, people speak at normal Spanish speed and with complex sentences.

And with these cases it is very important that you understand one thing: with this type of material, it is impossible for you to understand every word. It is difficult even for a native speaker to remember all that information because it is so much.

But these audios are made for you to learn to understand the meaning even if you don’t understand all the words.

Do you understand?

Most of the time you only need to understand 30% of the words to know what the content of the message is. And understanding the message is much more important.

And, if this can happen to a Spanish teacher, who has studied about these topics, who has had this experience many times with 6 different languages… Don’t worry if it happens to you too. It is normal.

Always try to focus on understanding the message, not the words. And if you get stressed without realizing it, take a break and resume your Spanish in a while.

We learn much more when we are happy hahaha.

¿Cómo va todo con tu español?

Sabes, hace unos días, Daniel,  uno de mis estudiantes de la universidad, me contó que su peor problema con el español era que siempre olvidaba las palabas.

Me dijo que, a pesar de que siempre repasaba las listas que escribía en su cuaderno o que utilizaba aplicaciones cuando iba en el autobús o en el tren; cuando estaba leyendo un texto, escuchando un audio o practicando conversación, no podía recordarlas o reconocerlas.

¿Te ha pasado a ti también?

A mí me sucedía todo el tiempo al principio, y entre más idiomas aprendía, se me hacía más y más difícil recordar vocabulario. Hasta que, en la universidad, empecé interesarme por una rama de la linguística que estudia el aprendizaje de idiomas y descubrí que lo estaba haciendo todo mal.

O bueno, quizás estoy exagerando un poco, pero sin duda mi método para aprender vocabulario no era para nada efectivo.

Como a Daniel, a mí me gustaba hacer listas de palabras. Tenía un cuaderno especial para ello en el que cáda página estaba dividida por la mitad y podía escribir la palabra en un lado y su traducción en el otro.

E igual que Daniel, pasaba horas y horas leyendo estas listas y tratando de recordar cada pieza de vocabulario, con muy pocos resultados.

Y tú yo sabemos que no es nada divertido tropezar con una palabra que sabes que has visto un millon de veces pero no puedes recordar qué es. ¿Verdad?

Bueno, te cuento que hay tres motivos por los que hacer listas o usar tarjetas con palabras traducidas no funciona, y son los siguientes:
  • Primero, tu cerebro necesita más que un significado para recordar. Necesita establecer asociaciones, y cuando aprendes palabras aisladas, solo con una traducción, no le estás dando suficiente información.
  • Además, tu cerebro está programado en “default” para olvidar lo que no es importante. Si no le das un contexto a lo que aprendes, para tu cerebro esas palabras nuevas serán solo “ruido” y las desechará.
  • Y finalmente, para no olvidar tienes que activar tu vocabulario. No es suficiente que lo memorices, tienes que usarlo en conversación tan pronto como puedas.

Por eso yo en mis clases les prohibo a mis estudiantes hacer listas de palabras. (Estoy exagerando de nuevo :p mis clases no son una dictadura jaja)

Pero ya, hablando en serio, esto es lo que tienes que hacer si no quieres tener este problema nunca más:
  1. Nunca aprendas palabras aisladas.

Piénsalo… Si yo te digo que “ir” significa “to go” … ¿de qué te sirve esta palabra?

¡No sirve para nada! … ¿cómo se conjuga? ¿con qué palabras, preposiciones, adverbios… la puedo combinar? ¿significa “to go” caminando? ¿con medios de transporte?¿tiene algún uso especial?

Para poder usar el verbo “ir” tienes que aprender “voy (conjugación) con Carlos (persona) en autobús (medio) a la casa de María (dirección) este sábado (tiempo) a las nueve de la mañana (hora) para estudiar inglés (objetivo)”

¡Olvida las listas de palabras y has listas de frases! no escribas el significado, escribe frases que te ayuden a recordar por contexto.

2. Necesitas ver, escuchar y usar una palabra por lo menos 16 veces en contextos distintos para que tu cerebro sienta que es importante.

Así que, estudia vocabulario por temas y luego busca materiales distintos sobre este tema para repasar.

Por ejemplo, si aprendes con un texto sobre la navidad en España … ¡Excelente! Ya tienes tus frases y ejemplos, ahora es momento de buscar un podcast sobre la navidad, de ver vídeos sobre las tradiciones navideñas.

Y, por último…

3. Tienes que activar. Así que mañana, cuando veas a tus amigos, cuéntales lo que aprendiste usando estas palabras.

How are you doing? I hope wonderfully.
 
Yesterday, after telling you about my experience with Japanese, I kept thinking and realized that I had only told you the negative part of the story.
 
It is a bad habit of us Latinos, sometimes we complain a lot and forget that everything has a positive side.
 
I learned something from my experience with Japanese that helped me in the most difficult moments when I was learning my other 6 languages.
 
If you think about it, I think most people would stop studying a language if they don’t feel they have made progress in 5 years, don’t you think?
 
But the truth is that I never felt unmotivated because I had done something unconsciously that made me persevere in spite of everything.
 
I had discovered the secret to staying motivated with a language. And I want to share it with you. This is:
 
Find a motive bigger than your curiosity.
 
Sounds a bit strange, doesn’t it? But I’ll explain.
 
Many people want to learn Spanish just because they are curious, because they like the sound of the language, the pronunciation, or simply because they want to speak another language.
 
This is a good reason to start, but it is not enough and it will not help you to continue in the difficult moments.
 
You see, I continued studying Japanese not just because I wanted to speak another language. In that case, surely learning Italian or learning French would have been easier for me.
 
But, actually, I continued studying all those years because I was in love with Japanese culture: I dreamed of traveling to Japan, of living in Japan one day and experiencing all those things I saw on TV.
 
I loved Japanese series, anime, comics. I wanted to taste the favorite food of all the characters of the series I liked; I wanted to get lost in the streets of Tokyo and I also dreamed of walking among the temples of Kyoto.
 
Do you understand?
 
I started studying Japanese out of curiosity, but I continued studying it because I had a purpose. And my purpose was, I one day wanted to experience that culture and that wonderful place.
 
And if you don’t know what your purpose is, you have to make one up.
 
You have to find one, two, three… a thousand personal reasons why you are going to speak Spanish. And for that, you have to do a total immersion in the culture.
 
Watch series, movies, documentaries, or Youtube videos. Listen to music, podcasts, interviews. Find out what places you would like to visit and imagine those trips in detail. Think about when you would like to go? what experiences do you want to have? what kind of friends will you make? what topics would you like to talk about in Spanish with them? are you going alone or with a companion? And more…
 
Dream big, and when the going gets tough, remember that dream. I promise you that if you do, you will never want to throw in the towel.

¿Qué tal estás? Espero que maravillosamente.

Ayer, después de contarte sobre mi experiencia con el japonés, me quedé pensando y me di cuenta que solo te había contado la parte negativa de la historia.

Es una mala costumbre de los latinos, a veces, nos quejamos mucho y olvidamos que todo tiene un lado positivo.

Y es que, de mi experiencia con el japonés aprendí algo que me ayudó en los momentos más difíciles cuando aprendía mis otros 6 idiomas.

Si lo piensas bien, creo que la mayoría de las personas dejarían de estudiar un idioma si en 5 años no sienten que han progresado ¿no lo crees?

Pero la verdad es que yo nunca me sentí desmotivado, porque había hecho algo inconscientemente que me hizo perseverar a pesar de todo.

Había descubierto el secreto para mantenerme motivado con un idioma. Y quiero compartirlo contigo. Este es:

Busca un motivo más grande que tu curiosidad.

Suena un poco extraño ¿verdad? Pero te explico.

Muchas personas quieren aprender español solo porque sienten curiosidad, porque les gusta el sonido del idioma, la pronunciación, o simplemente porque quieren hablar otra lengua.

Este es un buen motivo para comenzar, pero no es suficiente y no te ayudará a continuar en los momentos difíciles.

Verás, yo seguí estudiando japonés no solo porque quería hablar otra lengua. En ese caso, seguramente aprender italiano o aprender francés hubiera sido más fácil para mí.

Pero, en realidad, yo continué estudiando todos esos años porque estaba enamorado de la cultura japonesa: yo soñaba con viajar a Japón, con vivir en Japón un día y con experimentar todas esas cosas que veía en la televisión.

A mí, me encantaban las series japonesas, el ánime, los comics. Yo quería probar la comida favorita de todos los personajes de las series que me gustaban; quería perderme en las calles de Tokio y también soñaba con pasear entre los templos de Kioto.

¿Lo entiendes?

Yo, comencé a estudiar japonés por curiosidad, pero continué estudiándolo porque tenía un propósito. Y mi propósito era, que yo un día quería experimentar esa cultura y ese lugar maravilloso.

Y si no sabes cuál es tu propósito con el español, tienes que inventarte uno.

Tienes que encontrar uno, dos, tres… mil motivos personales por los que tú vas a hablar español. Y para eso, tienes que hacer una inmersión total en la cultura.

Ve series, películas, documentales o vídeos de Youtube. Escucha música, podcasts, entrevistas. Descubre qué lugares te gustaría visitar e imagina esos viajes en detalle. Piensa en ¿cuándo te gustaría ir? ¿qué experiencias quieres tener? ¿qué tipo de amigos harás? ¿de que temas te gustaría hablar en español con ellos?¿vas sol@ o acompañad@?

Sueña en grande, y cuando las cosas se pongan difíciles, recuerda ese sueño. Te prometo que si lo haces, nunca vas a querer tirar la toalla.
